A man in your life has a Birthday coming up and you've got that very familiar feeling of dread. The last thing you want right now is to wander aimlessly and hopelessly through shops for days trying to decide what to get him despite his numerous dismissals whenever the topic is raised, "I don't want anything", "I don't need anything", "your company is enough". Well fear not because I'm here to help (and by that I mean I'll make a note of some gifts that I have bought people and hopefully it inspires you!)

First things first, it's important to make a note of the persons hobbies and interests so that you have somewhere to start. I personally write down whenever someone mentions something that they want so that I have a long list of possible gift ideas whenever their Birthday/Christmas comes along. The list idea will also help you to get inspiration for other similar gifts that they may like .

Boys in particular are difficult to buy for - boyfriends, brothers, dads, uncles, friends, whoever it is, you're lucky if they are easy and tell you exactly what they would like (I'm not excusing girls because I know that we can be just as difficult, if not worse!). Knowing full well how difficult Tom is to buy for, I stupidly tasked myself with the challenge of buying 23 different presents for his 23rd Birthday - a nice gesture, I know, but my god was it difficult!! And yes, you have my full permission to use this idea, although it does get more difficult the older they get...

Below are a few gifts that I have previously bought the men in my life. Depending on your budget and the age of the person you're buying for, hopefully they can give you a bit of inspiration or a push in the right direction!

*Pre warning, this is a very personal post*

My most recent bout of depression left me feeling so mentally exhausted that it was difficult to remember when I was last truly happy. But now that it has passed, I think it might help for me to explain my relationship with depression and how I cope. And if this post helps just one other person then it's done what it was supposed to and I'm happy.

In the height of my depression, all I wanted was to sit in my room by myself and cry myself to sleep every night. This particular bout was long and I thought it would never end, I couldn't see the light at the end which made me more depressed because I didn't want to feel like this any more, it was just a vicious circle that I couldn't escape from. I had my normal days, my bad days, and my very bad days. Sometimes on my very bad days I'd lose control and not be able to hold back the tears when I was out with Tom. And then trying to explain what was wrong was like hitting my head against a brick wall. There's never just one thing that's wrong and that's really difficult to explain, it's lots of little things that most people would find insignificant, but to me they were overwhelming and I couldn't handle it. Knowing that Tom felt helpless in these situations was upsetting as well because the last thing I wanted was to upset him and make him uncomfortable. So once again, that vicious circle kicks in and I'm crying because I don't want to upset Tom, but he's upset because I am. It's never ending and exhausting. I decided that I needed a routine, something I could do if I ever felt myself slipping again. These are the things that help me when I'm really struggling to keep my head above water.

1. Find that rock - First things first, find that one person that you know will be there for you. I'm lucky that I have someone that is so supportive of me and my mental state. You need to stop thinking that you're bothering them when you talk to them about your problems and understand that they are there for you and care about how you're feeling.
2. Don't hold anything back when talking - Once you've found that rock, it's important for you to explain and articulate your emotions. I know that getting them into words isn't always easy but once you do, you can feel a weight lift off your shoulders. Even if you have to talk for hours, make sure that you've left no stone unturned in terms of your problems - even the trivial things like someone using all of the toilet paper!
3. Don't be afraid to ask for help - Be that professional help, a friend, or a family member. Asking for help is proof that you want to improve the situation that you're in. Sometimes help can just come in the form of a hug.
4. Do things that you know make you happy - Right, think back to that time where you were laughing so hard that you almost wet yourself, or when you thought "this is the life", or you just thought "this is fun". Now go out and do it. It's that simple. If for some reason you can't, then compromise, do something similar or just try new things. Even if it's just reading a book that makes you happy - do it.
5. Make plans and make sure you stick to them - One thing that helps me is having something to look forward to, be that in a days time, a weeks, or even a years time. It gives you something to do and takes your mind off other things. For example, during my depression, I contacted my sister to see if she wanted to go for a run at the end of the week. This meant that I was looking forward to seeing my sister AND I had someone to talk to about things.
6. Avoid your triggers when you know they will affect you most - If you've had depression before, you know what can trigger your emotions and make situations worse. Avoid these at all costs, especially if you can feel the depression coming on. This is the optimum time to distract yourself and surround yourself with positivity. Don't go looking for reasons to be upset ( I know that I'm guilty of this).
7. Try not to over think - I know it's easier said than done, believe me, but over thinking is so debilitating and mentally draining. Not to mention that it destroys relationships. If you latch onto a thought, the worst thing you can do when you're depressed is try to analyse that thought more because it just becomes a downwards spiral that's very difficult to recover from unless you confront it. I know that everybody is guilty of over thinking things, but during a depression it's almost like signing your own death warrant. It's better to write your thoughts down and perhaps come back to them later when you're feeling better. Keep a rational mind.
8. Go for a run - I could go on and on about the benefits of running, but I'll keep it short and to the point. Running has been scientifically proven to increase your levels of endorphins (aka happy hormones) and so is a natural mood booster. Not to mention that it's great for your health and keeps your mind sharp. Also, I know that a lot of peoples weight is a contributing factor to depression so going for a run means that you're actively trying to change that.
9. Eat healthier - Everyone deals with depression differently. Some people lose their appetites when they're depressed and stop eating, whilst others find comfort in food and tend to over eat. Maintaining a balanced, healthy diet is important whilst your battling to keep your brain and body healthy. Here is website with a list of the foods, vitamins, and nutrients that you should make sure you're getting enough of. And don't forget to drink enough water!
10. Don't be afraid to cry - This one is pretty plain and simple. Don't be ashamed to cry, it doesn't mean that you're weak nor does it make you annoying. It purely means that you are struggling with some things that other people may not necessarily understand. And personally, I feel a lot better after I've had a good cry.

This is just my personal way of dealing with depression. Some may disagree, and that's fine, but it's important to remember that everyone is different and we all have different coping mechanisms. What works for me may not work for others, and what works for others may not work for me. That does not mean that one person is right and the other is wrong, it just means that you have to listen to what is being asked and not give what you think is needed.

After a rather strenuous workout session, myself and a friend decided to make the most of the beautiful sunny weather and pop out for a nice light Sunday brunch. The Eelbrook, located just on the corner of Eelbrook Common and next to King's Road was our restaurant of choice (it also hapens to be one of our favourites, so that helps!).

It's a fairly new restaurant but has become a huge success with the help of delicious food, fantastic staff, a beautiful setting, and regular appearances on Made In Chelsea (which has attracted a lot of fans of the show).

Their menu ranges from light lunches such as salads, soups, and sandwiches, to a more substantial meal such as burgers and chips, so you'll always find something to tickle your tastebuds! But no matter what's ordered, you can always expect to receive your food beautifully presented.

For drinks, Sam and I shared a cold bottle of San Pellegrino sparkling water which we coupled with a pot of Chai tea for me and a pot of lemongrass and ginger tea for Sam.

For our lunches, I had the "Avocado" which includes, avocado, tomato, chilli, onion, corriander, and a poached egg on a slice of sourdough - Delicious!

Sam had the Egg Royal which is poached egg, smoked salmon, and hollandaise sauce on a muffin (with a side of avocado) - I didn't try it, but I was told it was also really yummy!

If you ever find yourself wondering around Fulham/Chelsea looking for a nice spot of lunch, then I would highly recommend the Eelbrook. (You may have to book in advance though - they're very popular!)

I've been battling with the idea of whether or not to write this blog post. Mainly because I wasn't paying attention to all of the itty bitty details around me so when it comes to a detailed blog post, this shall not be one of those! Instead I was enjoying the company I was waith and just taking in my surroundings.

Right, from the start then! Toms sister was in London for a few days and was due to travel back to Antwerp at the end of the week. As it was her birthday that weekend, Tom and I decided that it would be nice to celebrate with her and take a little trip to Amsterdam at the same time. With that being decided, we booked our bus tickets and travelled back with Grace (bonus rant at the end about the bus journey).

We celebrated Grace's birthday in Antwerp on Friday and then travelled (by bus) to Amsterdam on the Saturday. Unfortunately, the weather was pretty crap for the entire time that we were there, but nevertheless it didn't dampen our spirits!
We arrived at around 6pm in Amsterdam and got the 26 Tram from Central station to our airbnb flat 10 minutes away in Steigereiland. I can't emphasise enough how nice this flat was. It was a beautiful floating house which had everything we could have needed with the benefit of lovely hosts. The highlight of the flat though was definitely the Jacuzzi (which we spent a long time in drinking champagne and eating strawberries!). So if you ever find yourself in Amsterdam and are looking for a lovely place to stay then I highly recommend THIS boat house.

We dropped our stuff off at the flat and headed back to central to pick up some dinner, drinks, and other "bits and bobs". My first impressions of Amsterdam were that it was architecturally beautiful. All of the narrow winding street were alive and buzzing with locals and tourists out enjoying their evening. I think the fact that the EUROS were on played a big part in the atmosphere of the city and pubs too. It was a bit of a shock to experience how "open" the Red Light District was; the live sex shows, the vibrators and dildos displayed in store fronts, and the women in the windows dancing and trying to persuade their male watchers to pay for a lap dance behind the closed curtains. Personally I found it a bit weird and sad to see.

Sadly, Grace and her boyfriend had to leave early on Sunday to get back to Antwerp so Tom and I decided to explore more of Amsterdam before our flight home. The weather was a lot nicer on the Sunday which made walking around that much more enjoyable. We enjoyed some old, stale churros from one of the local shops (big mistake, we should've gone for one of the waffles instead!!) whilst sitting next to the canal soaking in the sun. There and then we decided to come back in July for a longer weekend because we didn't get to see as much as we would have liked (it would have been nice to go to the Anne Frank Haus and some other museums).

At about 6pm, we slowly made our way to the airport where we discovered that the plane was delayed by an hour. This meant that we finally got home at about 12.30am (and yes, we had work the next day *sad face*)

We walked about 20km everyday over the weekend so the blisters when I got home were....yeah, you get the point! My poor little feet!

**Now for a little rant about FlixBus. Definitely the worst bus company that I've ever travelled with. The driver was rude and made many obnoxious comment, not to mention that he stopped the bus in the middle of the motorway to complain that the manure smell outside was making it difficult for him to drive. (He also blamed the smell on everyone on the bus, demanding us to put our shoes on). He then proceeded to empty an entire bottle of Oust whilst stampeding up and down the aisle. After that little episode, he answered his mobile and proceeded to have an hour long conversation whilst on the motorway. Myself, Tom, and Grace have all complained to the company and it seems that nothing is/has been done. So if you happen to be travelling by bus, then please avoid Flixbus at all costs!!**

INGREDIENTS

4 egg whites
Caster sugar (double the weight of the egg whites)
A pinch of salt
Vanilla extract
Colour paste (it's important that it's paste and not food colouring as food colouring doesn't give the right colour and makes the mixture too liquidy)
Mini marshmallows

METHOD

1. Preheat the oven to 100 degrees Celsius

2. Clean all instruments with vinegar or lemon juice to get rid of any grease that may prevent you from making the perfect little meringues

3. Crack the eggs and place the egg whites in a bowl. It's important to do the eggs one by one over a separate bowl and then adding them to the main mixing bowl. This is in case any yolk gets into the mixture which will them make the 4 egg whites unusable.

4. Weigh your egg whites and measure out double the weight in caster sugar in a separate bowl (for example, egg whites = 150g, then you will need 300g of caster sugar)

5. Using a mixed/hand held whisk, whisk the egg whites on a slow setting until tight air bubbles start to form - this will give the meringues a stronger structure. Once you reach this consistency, turn up your mixture to a higher speed and whisk until the egg whites are white and holding their peaks (you should be able to hold the bowl upside down over your head without anything falling out!)

6. Slowly begin to add your caster sugar and salt to the mixture 1 tablespoon at a time whilst still mixing

7. Once all the sugar has been added, keep whisking for another 5 mins (to test if you mixture is ready, take a bit on your index finger and rub it between your finger and thumb. If the mixture feels gritty then it is not ready and needs more mixing as the sugar hasn't fully combined)

8. Next, add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to the mixture and whisk again until fully combined

9. Place a sheet of grease proof paper on a baking tray and add a few rows of mini marshmallows

10. Depending on how you want your meringues to look, there are two different piping techniques that I use.

11. Bake in the oven for approximately 30 - 35 minutes or until they come away from the baking parchment with ease

PIPING TECHNIQUE ONE

1. Divide the mixture evenly between 3 separate bowls and add a different colour paste to each.

2. Lay out a piece of clingfilm and spoon the different colour mixtures into 3 rows in the centre.

3. Roll up the clingfilm to make a sort of cylinder which can be placed in a piping bag

4. Pipe the mixture onto the marshmallows

PIPING TECHNIQUE TWO

1. Get your different colour pastes and paint a straight lines down the sides of the piping bags (make sure that none of the sides touch each other and contaminate the other colours)

2. Carefully spoon the meringue mixture into the piping bag

3. Before you start piping the meringue onto the marshmallows, be sure to squeeze the mixture out of the piping bag until the colours start appearing (the first part will be white)

4. Pipe the mixture onto the marshmallows

BEWARE - THIS METHOD COULD LEAVE YOUR MERINGUES LOOKING LIKE TOOTHPASTE!! (be careful what colours you choose!)

Happy eating!

However, there are a few rules to this game...

1. You must use your full name - no cheating by just doing Sam instead of Samantha
2. You may only have a 10 second break between each workout

If your name is 2 charaters or less : repeat 10 times
If your name is 3-5 characters long: repeat 4-5 times
If your name is 6-8 characters long: repeat 3 times
If your name is 9+ characters long: repeat twice

If you really want to make it a challenge, you could always try doing your first, middle and surname!
